FIGHTING THE FEAR OF CHANGE: IBM

Change-osis or the fear of change
Is natural at times
Change is often risky
It requires that we leave
The familiar and strike
Out into the unknown
And that create fear

Change-osis
Keep us stagnant and complacent
Even though we know change
May be good for us
We tell people we’re content

Better the devil you know
Than the devil you don’t know
The old saying goes
Fighting the fear of change
The IBM staff story

IBM had always had
A policy of lifetime employment
If you were loyal to the company
The company was loyal to you
But eventually IBM had to adjust
A new business climate
And shrinking market share

The company announced
That for the first time in history
There would be layoffs
An awful lot of change resisters
And people with change-osis
Were roaming the halls of IBM back then

People who never had considered
The possibility of a job with another company
Had to accept new uncertain reality
For the first time they were going
To have a search for a job outside of IBM

Many of these folks
Had never written a resume
And had no idea how to describe
What they did at IBM in outsider’s term
Fighting the fear of change: IBM
The market place changes
Job change sometimes job even go away
What do you do then? Like the mice
You can stand in the middle
Of the maze and yell
Who moved my cheese?
Or you can adapt to the change
And get to work
